John Sloan and His Students

This exhibition draws from DelArt’s collection and archives.

Best known for his realist paintings of everyday life in New York City, John Sloan was an instructor at the Art Students League from 1916 through the early 1930s—a dynamic time for American art. Sloan’s hundreds of students included realist painters, illustrators, and abstract artists, such as the caricaturist Peggy Bacon, painter and printmaker Isabel Bishop, and illustrator Don Freeman. This exhibition draws from DelArt’s collection and archives to highlight the range of Sloan’s teaching and its impact on the American art scene. This exhibition is part of the nationwide celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Art Students League of New York.
